"Where are you going?" a familiar voice struck me from behind.
"Heechul!" Sungmin smiled at the older boy who came running toward us.
I turned around and saw our friend, Kim Heechul, holding a chair in his hands. "We're going to the Bonamana cafeteria, Heenim. Call it a hideout."
"You won't be able to defend its glass doors." He spoke with so much conviction.
“Have you met up with Kyuhyun and Yesung?” I asked, looking around for any signs of the boys Sungmin and I called boyfriends.
“Yeah. They’re at the base we have established in Oh Hall. Kyuhyun’s working on weaponry with Changmin and Kibum, and Yesung’s helping the student council strategize an escape route,” he answered.
“I am here gathering survivors from the initial attacks. Since you are planning to go to the cafeteria anyway, I'll go with you. We need to stock up on our supplies before help comes."
“The chair?” Sungmin asked, raising an eyebrow at the chair.
"Since Hannie’s defending the base and can’t leave it, I'm using this chair as a weapon," he laughed. "We're low on ammunition. Kidding. We take what we can get."
Heechul, Sungmin, and I started walking towards the cafeteria, passing by the communications department and unto the Neorago field.
"Well," I said. "It has been a while since there has been any attack. Maybe it has not spread here yet."
"Perhaps," Heechul looked around. "But you're wrong. Look."
There were dozens.
No.
There were dozens of dozens.
A legion of zombies was rushing towards our direction. Their eyes were bulging in terror. Crimson red saliva was drooping from their mouths. They moved so awkwardly, with their heads tilted to one side, and their arms extended towards our direction.
Oh, shit. There was no time to scream, only to run.
My legs reacted to the adrenaline. I've never felt myself run so fast. We ran past the Neorago field, past the stairs that led to the Replay Recreation Room, and into the Bonamana Cafeteria. We immediately opened the doors and locked them as we got in.
But we locked them way too late. A few of the zombies got inside.
The students inside began panicking immediately, running from one side of the cafeteria to the other, like ants under a magnifying glass.
One boy with huge bones from one corner of the cafeteria was eating a hotdog sandwich when one zombie tried to take a bite at him but almost bit his hotdog instead. In order to save his hotdog, he moved it from side to side to avoid the zombie's mouth. In his futile attempt to save it, he moved it closer to him, over his shoulder. Fortunately, it saved him. A zombie came to him surprisingly from behind, but instead of the zombie taking a bite on his shoulder, its teeth instead landed on the hotdog.
Good lord did he get mad.
He threw a huge, solid punch directly on the zombie's nose.
It fell with its head bleeding profusely on the cafeteria floor. He did the same to the zombies beside him. He bashed their heads on the tables and immediately they lost themselves.
"Fuck you, idiots! You ate my sandwich!" he shouted at the zombies twitching in pain beneath him.
"Kangin!" Heechul shouted. "I guess being a muscle-head does have its uses."
Kangin chose to ignore the insult and rolled his eyes at our feminine-looking friend. They both laughed. Figures, they’ve always had that agree-to-disagree twisted sense of camaraderie…
“As long as they don’t get to Teukie… I’ll be fine.” Kangin growled. “Wookie! Min! You guys okay?” he added once he noticed Sungmin and me gathering supplies.
It was back to the reality. We needed to gather our supplies immediately.
Using the chairs and tables all around us, we bashed the zombie's heads one by one. Yet there were still dozens of zombies outside the area, and they were close to breaking the glass doors of the Bonamana cafeteria.
"We need to hurry up," I told them.
"Everyone, quick! Gather supplies!"
We took everything from crackers to brownies to the fruits in the Smoothie King stand. Too bad the lady selling the smoothies became a zombie. We had to kill her, too.
"Is anyone wounded?" I asked.
A few people raised their bleeding arms. Heechul and Kangin shook their heads.
"This is no good. Once you have been bitten, you have only about twenty minutes until you become one of those gruesome creatures. You will be more of a threat than a help in a few minutes. Everyone who was not bitten, stay with us. Everyone, who was bitten... well… Please kill yourselves now; you'll do more help to humanity that way."
"Excuse me!" Jung Jessica, Heechul’s shopping partner-in-crime screamed. "Heenim! We are not going to kill ourselves! Who are you to tell us to do that?"
"Bitch, I love you, but if you want to become one of them, then you'll just be more of a liability than an asset." Heechul grabbed a knife from behind the counter and brandished it toward his blonde friend.
"I do not want it to come to the point where all of you will become zombies and I will have to kill you one by one. Not to mention you might even infect these people who are not bitten because you did not want to kill yourselves."
"There must be a better way! There must be a better plan!" Lee Sunny, Sungmin’s younger sister shouted. “SUNGMIN!” she wailed, looking at Sungmin with teary eyes.
"Well, I'm open to suggestions, but trust me, there isn't much time," Kangin said as he pointed outside.
The zombies outside the cafeteria were violently ramming their heads against its glass door,; we could feel the door weakening by the minute.
“If only we could run and ask uncle for help!” Sunny lamented to Sungmin who looked like he wanted to kill.
“Oh… for the love of…” Heechul began, but he cut himself short. “Wait… Sunny! Sungmin! Call your uncle and tell him to call the fire department, the police, the SWAT team, anyone who can help us!”
“Why should we wait for President Lee to call for help?” Jessica asked. “I mean we could do it ourselves,” she added, taking out a Blackberry to call the cops.
“Yeah, but those idiots would give the situation a lot more importance if it’s ‘President Lee Soo Man’ who calls for help,” Sungmin supplied. “Sis, please call him at once!”
Sunny nodded as she took out her cell phone to contact her uncle. She talked frantically; explaining to him that there were was a zombie attack in the university and they needed some god-damned help right now. Heaven help the entire school if they became a sort of necropolis. We all stared at Sunny as she threw her cell phone at Sungmin with a frustrated scream.
“He doesn’t believe me, Min!” Sunny screeched, throwing herself to the ground.
“Uncle said that there’s no such thing as zombies and that I probably fell asleep in class, so there’s no way that he’s going to bother the busy policemen and fire-fighters of Seoul just for a dumb daydream!”
The short girl broke down and screamed as I could only see Sungmin staring helplessly at his younger sister. I saw his fists were clenched and he was biting his lower lip as hard as he could. He didn’t need to tell me that he wanted nothing more than to take his younger sister in his arms and assure her that everything was going to be alright. Unfortunately, we both knew he could not touch Sunny, as we had no idea when would happen to us if we touched anyone who had been bitten.
"Ryeo! I have a plan."
Im Yoona, my friend from Korean Literature was the only person ever called me with that pet name, and I was terrified to see that she too had been bitten. She was the only female, save for my mother, who I could trust with my life. Her shoulder was bleeding through her blouse and her leg had a couple of deep scratches. I knew that she was going to turn into one of them soon.
“Okay, Yoong, let’s hear it,” I said, as I feared for the worst, “we don’t have much time.”
"Since we are all stranded here, those of us who are infected will protect you. We will act as a human shield as you attempt to escape with the supplies," she explained, and Sunny and Jessica nodded their assent to this idea, confirming my fears for their safety.
"Well, that's brilliant, actually," Heechul commented, smiling at my friend.
Sungmin and I looked at Heechul and Kangin with worried faces. "Are we really going to sacrifice these people?"
I knew they all felt my pity. It was unfair to have our innocent schoolmates die like this, especially when some of them had so much in store for their futures.
"But... Sunny..." Sungmin whispered, staring at his sister who was embracing Yoona.
“And Yoona… and Jessica too…” I added, promising to find out who was behind this.
"We have no choice," Kangin reminded us.
"We will leave this place in approximately three minutes," Heechul spoke in his ‘Princess Heenim’ tone, which automatically made everyone listen to him.
"Say your last remarks and your prayers," Kangin ordered as he bowed his head and closed his eyes.
The usually bitchy Heechul couldn’t control his tears as he listened to Jessica begging him to keep her younger sister Krystal and her best friend Tiffany safe. Heechul’s eyes were red as he saw one half of the drama club’s feared “HeeSica tandem” showing the soft side she rarely displayed.
Sungmin silently cried as he apologized to Sunny for not being able to save her. No matter how much the girl assured him that it was not his fault, I knew my best friend still blamed himself. Sungmin promised to inform their parents and uncle about Sunny’s fate once we got out of here. It didn’t take a genius to see that it killed Sungmin that he couldn’t save his sister from this awful fate.
When Yoona came up to me and handed me a crystal butterfly necklace and an angel ring, I would be lying if I said I didn’t die a little inside.
“Ryeo,” Yoona sobbed softly, “find Kwon Yuri and give her the ring. Tell her to give it to my parents and let them know what happened to me.”
“The necklace?” I asked, trying to fight the tears that threatened to run down my face.
“Keep it,” she said, smiling at me. “You’re my best male friend, and I want you to have it. Love you, Ryeo.”
“Love you too, Yoongie.” I smirked at my best female friend. I silently promised to myself that I would find the idiots behind this mess and make them regret it.
Heechul, Kangin, Sungmin and I watched as Jessica, Sunny, and Yoona led the students who were bitten toward the cafeteria doors.
God, what is happening?
Is there no more room in Hell for the damned souls?
