Chapter 3 – “Blood, bodies, and bones”

As Yoona, Jessica, and Sunny led the attack against the zombies, those who weren’t bitten started rallying around Heechul and Kangin. All of us were eager to get out of here, alive and human. While those who were bitten defended us, we hoarded as many supplies as we could. We almost could not carry them out if Kangin’s classmate Park Yoochun had not found the black garbage bags in the cafeteria’s storage room.

Aside from Yoochun and Kangin, Heechul, Sungmin, and I managed to find nine other survivors. Our band’s drummer Park Luna was among them. I was thankful that she survived the attack. Aside from losing another friend to those demons, our band’s guitarist Jungmo would kill anyone if she turned into one of them. Another person I knew was Choi Minho, the kid I used to teach piano. Lastly, there was Kim Kibum or Key, who lived across Sungmin and Sunny’s house.

“Wookie,” Heechul’s snippy tone snapped me out of my worry for those who were sacrificing themselves for us, “you’ll be the third person to climb out of the window. Minho, Kangin, and I will take turns in shoving you people out the window.”

“Excuse me?!” I asked, looking from Sungmin to Heechul to Kangin, and back to Heechul again.

Did I just hear right? Kim Heechul, the person who hated physical activities, was actually going to carry people and climb out a window. I never thought I’d live to see the day…

“What?” he snarled, as though reading everybody’s thoughts, “Kim Kangin, Lee Sungmin and Kim Ryeowook… Don’t give me those looks! We’re in the middle of a crisis, so I have no time to fix my face. Besides, the sooner we get out of here, the sooner I’m back in Hannie’s safe arms.”

“How about Minho climbs out first?” Key suggested, “that way, he can catch the rest of us as we go out the window.”

While everyone else threw suggestions on the order in which we were going to evacuate, I looked among the windows of the cafeteria to see which one was the easiest one to get out of. I was more than half-tempted to suggest simply breaking the glass that separated the cafeteria from the Bonamana walkway, but then I remembered that it would also give the zombies an easier way to get to the rest of us.

As they finally agreed that Kangin would climb out first and then we would all climb out by height, I spotted the perfect exit for us to use.

“Hey, guys!” I shouted, suddenly feeling conscious of having people’s eyes on me, “instead of climbing out a window, why don’t we just use that?”

I pointed to an aircon that had fallen to the floor, leaving a hole wide enough for a person to crawl through. If I remembered correctly, that was the aircon that dripped on our heads when we passed it on the way to the Miracle and Honey dorms.

Heechul nodded in approval at my suggestion. “We don’t have much time, guys. Kangin! Get climbing!”

Heechul was right, time really was running out, as the zombies had managed to break the glass door and kill a few of our schoolmates. To Sungmin’s relief, Sunny was still alive and fighting the zombies as hard as she could. Yoona had taken to breaking bottles over the zombies’ heads, while Jessica screamed at the zombies, momentarily confusing them. It was only a matter of time before they zombies penetrated the human shield and got to us, so we really needed to hurry up.

A tap on the shoulder from Sungmin snapped me back to my senses. The next thing I knew Minho was hoisting me up the hole. I was right; the hole was wide enough for someone to crawl through. I crawled my way out of the hole and I saw Luna and Yoochun with Kangin on the other side. Kangin had informed the other two about the base at Oh Hall; Luna and Yoochun were already contacting their friends where the base was.

While they did that, I looked around, seeking the fastest route to Oh Hall. I had two options: either run across Neorago field again or steal one of the cars at the Miracle parking lot and drive ourselves to Oh Hall. While the latter sounded so tempting, I knew it was impossible. We had no idea who owned these cars, and even if we did, it wasn’t like he or she was going to hand over the keys to us any time soon.

A few minutes later, Sungmin, Key, and the other survivors had come out of the hole. Minho and Heechul were the only ones left on the other side. I swear, even in a crisis, Heechul did not lose his dramatic moments. We could hear them arguing who was going to climb out first. Minho offered to stay, but Heechul said that he was the older one so Minho had to be saved. They went at it for what seemed like forever until Kangin went back to the hole to retrieve them both.

Sungmin and I looked at each other, apparently we were thinking along the same lines. We moved to the center of the mini-crowd and called for everyone’s attention.

“How many of you have cars parked at Miracle parking lot?” Sungmin asked, looking hopefully among the students.

Nobody raised their hands. Damn it! I guess we were all going to have to run across the field again.

“Ryeowook!” a voice shouted out as a tall girl with her hair in a ponytail came running toward us.

The girl looked very familiar, and I remembered frequently seeing her with Yoona. For the life of me, I just couldn’t recall her name at the moment. I think she was called Yul or something like that… Ugh, I decided to think about it later.

“I guess the monsters got here too?” she asked us, trying to see behind our heads.

“Those things got here and bit some people.” I replied, trying my best to remember the girl’s name.

“I was planning to meet my friends, hide in my car, and maybe run a few of them over and get out of here..” she rambled, “but… all gates are locked, so it’s useless trying to go home.”

We all stared at the girl in shock. How could the gates be locked at a time like this? And how come the gates to SM University are locked at all? Our campus was known to be one of the most open campuses in Seoul, and NOW the guards decided to close the gates? Those gates could only be controlled from the university’s main security computer. We’d need a computer genius to hack it if we wanted to get out of here. There was something weird going on here…

“That’s definitely one idea down the drain then…” I whispered to Sungmin.

“So much for getting out of here alive.” He added.

“Uh… excuse me.. but.. Who are you?” Heechul’s voice rang out as he got out of the hole, with Minho and Kangin behind him.

“I’m Kwon Yuri. You are?” she asked, looking at us with a raised eyebrow.

Oh right! Yuri… Now I really remember. She was the one of the girls Yoona was always if I was with Yesung and the other guys. Note to self: I must talk to Kwon Yuri when we get to the base.

“We’ll introduce ourselves later.” Sungmin hurriedly answered, “right now we have more important matters to take care of.”

“You said you had a car, didn’t you?” I asked, knowing Sungmin’s line of thinking.

Yuri nodded, indicating for me to continue what I wanted to say. “Well, there’s a base established at Oh Hall. Maybe you can take some of the students and the supplies to the base. How many people can fit in your car?”

“Lucky for us, I brought the mini-van today, so I think I can accommodate around ten people,” she answered, “and there’s room in the trunk for the three huge bags of supplies.”

“Good. Save for a few knives and forks, we can leave everything with you.” Kangin said. “Take as many people with you, Yuri. We’re counting on you to keep them safe.”

“When you get there,” Heechul added, “tell the ones guarding the fort that Kim Heechul told you about the base. And be sure to let everyone else know about the base too.”

“Aren’t you guys coming?” she asked.

“We still have to find other survivors in the area.” Kangin answered for us. “We’ll meet you at the base.”

Yuri nodded, motioning for the students to follow her. The only people left with the four of us were Yoochun, Minho, Key, and Luna.

“There’s probably not going to be any room for the rest of us.” Luna answered the question none of us dared to ask.

“Besides, I want to make sure that Jungmo is safe.” She added. I smiled at how much Luna loved the senior student who had become another brother to her. Oh, if only she knew what Jungmo’s feelings for her really were…

“If we’re all ready to run…” Key whispered, looking at us for some sign.

“On the count of three,” I instructed, “One…”

“Two,” Sungmin whispered, staring at Mirotic Hall across the road.

“THREE!” Heechul and Luna shouted, and we all sprinted across Neorago field, focusing on nothing but Mirotic Hall.

We sprinted to the building, while silently thanking God that we did not run into any zombies. Aside from Yoochun tripping more than once as we ran, nothing much had happened. Even as we ran through the corridors of Mirotic Hall, I was silently praying that we didn’t encounter any zombies there.

Unfortunately, God must hate me right now.

A huge wave of zombies came out of the classrooms in Mirotic Hall, their eyes unfocused as they dragged their feet toward us. That was the only similarity they bore with those zombie movies Yesung loved to watch. The difference was this was real life. No matter how much I pinched myself, praying that I would find myself in back in Chu Wing, listening to Mr. Kangta drone on and on; I found myself here at the end of Mirotic Hall, running for my life.

Luckily, those zombies were too slow to actually catch up. We were already at the middle of the Red Sun Garden when they reached the end of Mirotic Hall. I could see Oh Hall from where I was. I truly hoped that Yesung was safe. If he turned into one of them, I have no idea what I’d do.

Why must trouble come when we’re so close to safety? I swear, whoever is handling destiny’s strings has a thing for horror movie clichés. Just when we were about to cross the street to get to Oh Hall, a legion of zombies came to us from the Confession Pavilion and the Hug Laboratory.

I usually didn’t believe in violence, but these zombies were getting on my nerves. My keyboard was already bathed in zombie blood, so I no longer cared that it was going to get any dirtier. I bashed my keyboard on the head of the first zombie I saw.

Everyone else mercilessly stabbed the zombies with their knives, not stopping to see if they were their former classmates.

“If any of you idiots attacked my Kyu, you are going to regret it!” Sungmin threatened as he stabbed one zombie and gave a flying kick to another one. Anyone who knew Kyuhyun or Sungmin would know how protective they are of each other. Mess with one of them and it’s going to be hell to pay.

Heechul and Kangin seemed to be treating it like some sick game. They were having a mini-contest to see who could kill more zombies. It looked like Kangin had given Heechul his knife and used his strength to beat the hell out of those zombies. Heechul meanwhile, seemed to be having fun stabbing the zombies or throwing the knives at their heads. The two seniors were laughing like a pair of maniacs as they kept count of the number of zombies they’ve killed.

Luna had a look of determination on her face as she stabbed the zombies with both the knife and her drumsticks. I was surprised that she was willing to get those drumsticks stained at all. Usually, if anyone else tried touching those, Luna would get really possessive. Not that I blamed her, after all those drumsticks were the first gift she received from the rest of the band.

Yoochun, Minho, and Key were holding well on their own, despite Yoochun failing to kill his target a couple of times, his mistakes turned out to be helpful for Key or Minho. The three boys were just about to kill off another one of their victims when the victim called out Luna’s name.

Luna and the three boys were frozen in their tracks as the rest of us continued killing off our own targets. The victim’s face was covered with blood and it trickled down his shirt. He looked as though he was in the transition of changing into one of them. There was just something about his bloodshot eyes that stopped me from going over there and killing him myself.

And then, I saw the boy holding onto a very familiar black guitar. That was when it hit me.

“Jungmo?!” I shouted, as I stabbed my current opponent with my keyboard. I ran over to where Luna and the boys were.

“Yes, Wookie. It’s your awesome guitarist who got himself bitten by those monsters,” Jungmo swore as he tried to fight the monstrosity that was eating him inside.

“Jungmo!” Luna and I sobbed, not knowing what to do anymore.

“Henry… and Taeng… are safe.” Jungmo whispered, gasping for breath with each word he said, “Wookie, can you and Yesung protect Luna for me?”

“Jungmo…” Luna whispered, trying her best not to collapse in my arms.

“Luna, I beg you, keep yourself safe.” Jungmo whispered, struggling to keep his sanity, “take this with you. I want you to have her…”

Jungmo gave Luna the guitar he had named after her. Luna was too busy clinging on my shirt, so I made Minho take the beloved instrument from the bandmate we were about to lose.

“Luna… please…” he begged, “be the one to kill me before I kill you.”

Luna stared at us with tear-stained eyes. I knew the girl could never kill someone she regarded as special to her. She looked up to the sky, as though begging for a sign from heaven. She took a little too long praying for Jungmo’s damned soul as he had already fallen to the ground, taking a nice big bite from Yoochun’s neck as he did. As she let the tears freely flow, Luna smashed the guitar on Jungmo’s head. She relentlessly attacked until the former guitarist was just one big pile of gruesome body parts.

Meanwhile, I worked with Minho and Key, trying to subdue Yoochun. It wasn’t an easy task, but we had managed. With my keyboard and the knives, Park Yoochun was just a bloodied mess on the red brick road of SooMan University.

Thankfully, we had finally reached Oh Hall. We practically collapsed in front of Han Geng and Choi Sooyoung, who were guarding the base. As Sungmin and I were about to hit the floor, two very familiar bodies caught us. Although we had lost so many people, I was glad that Sungmin and I had Kyuhyun and Yesung to make us forget about those horrors even for just one minute.
