-------------------------------

The moment I saw you, my whole world had changed completely.

Lee Hyukjae practically grew up in the palace. His father Lee Seungri was the royal gardener; his mother Hyoyeon was the royal seamstress, while his older sister Sungmin was an imperial concubine until Kyuhyun, one of the King’s advisers, had made her his wife.

Ever since he was a child, Hyukjae dreamed of becoming a soldier for the Royal Army. He had dreamed of defending the country from foreign bastards who sought to invade Korea. He had proven himself worthy enough to become the protector of the King and the country.

The moment Hyukjae laid his eyes on Queen Donghae, he knew she was different. She was dressed in a yellow and pink hanbok, with dark pink flowers and the royal headdress in her hair. Her chocolate brown eyes smiled cheerfully, despite the somber look on her square face. Her plump red lips looked as though they hid a secret only she knew about.

She was his queen, he was only a soldier assigned to protect her

Ever since Hyukjae learned that the queen needed only the best soldiers by her side, Hyukjae resolved to become one of them.He trained day and night, only stopping to either eat or sleep. There were some days that he forgot to eat and sleep. He was determined to stand by the queen’s side and protect her from danger. Queen Donghae’s enemies were those Hyukjae’s sword could not touch.

It was evident that King Siwon had no affections for his new queen. Her vivacious and child-like nature was a stark contrast to his stoic, mature self. No matter how much Queen Donghae attempted to win the love of her husband, he seemed to have preferred the company of the concubine Kibum. To add insult to injury, Donghae was yet to produce an heir while Kibum had already given Siwon four daughters and a son.

Despite the lack of love between husband and wife, Queen Donghae had managed to win over the love of the rest of the country. She may have been innocent, but her kind heart made laws that improved life for the commoners.

Hyukjae was doing his nightly rounds when he thought he heard sobbing coming from the gardens. He cautiously approached the gardens so as to catch the intruder by surprise. Instead of an intruder, he saw a woman’s silhouette crumpled on the grass, near the fish pond. Hyukjae was on his guard. For all he knew it could have been some cross-dresser attempting to kill the King.

The woman had been crying, judging from the sobs that seemed to have subsided. Hyukjae dared to take a look at the woman’s face… and gasped.

“Queen Donghae! Your Majesty!” he nervously got on his knees and bowed down. “I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to intrude… “

“Sit up and show me your face, soldier.” The queen firmly commanded after she had composed herself.

“Tell me… What is your name?” she asked more gently this time.

“My name is Lee Hyukjae, your Majesty.” He replied.

“Allow me to escort you back to your chambers, your Majesty.” Hyukjae added as he offered a hand to help the Queen Donghae stand up. Her white hands felt very soft and smooth against his rough, calloused ones. “It is not safe for Korea’s next Empress to be wandering around the Palace by herself.”

During the walk back to the palace, they had conversed as though they had been long time friends, rather than queen and soldier.

“I haven’t smiled and laughed this much in years!” she exclaimed after Hyukjae narrated an embarrassing experience during his training.

It ended much too soon for Hyukjae as they had arrived at the Queen’s royal chambers.

“Thank you for keeping me company, Hyukkie.” Donghae shyly smiled, looking more like a shy child rather than the most powerful woman in Korea.

Hyukjae stared in surprise as he opened the door for her. They had only been talking for less than an hour, but she had already given him a nickname. He smiled back at her, showing his gums.

“I think you would make a splendid soldier, Lee Hyukjae.” She added, reverting back to her regal demeanor as she entered her room.

It wasn’t supposed to happen… but then it did… He was too powerless to stop.

To the surprise of everyone in the palace, Queen Donghae had requested Hyukjae to be her personal bodyguard. Her husband Siwon didn’t even bother to ask why, but he decided to grant her request.

Hyukjae could have sworn that the queen was someone with a split personality. In front of the rest of the world, Donghae was a decisive, firm, and serious ruler. She fought for her ideas until the rest of the council either gave her a better option or gave in to her suggestions. She was cold, harsh, and demanding towards Hyukjae whenever they were in public. Sometimes, her demands were unreasonable. Hyukjae obeyed them anyway, and it simply was not because she would have him killed if he refused.

When Hyukjae and Donghae were alone in her chambers, she was even livelier than a child who had eaten too much sweets. She also treated Hyukjae as her confidant. She shared all her innocent hopes, ideas, and dreams for Korea. During these conversations, Hyukjae found himself staring at her red lips as she talked about the notion of the existence of worlds and life forms beyond the world they lived in. Her eyes sparkled with excitement whenever she’d feed the fish in the pond. In fact, she jokingly called herself “Queen Fishy” when she was alone with Hyukjae.

After a particularly erratic afternoon and enduring with Donghae’s mood swings, Hyukjae was ready to eat a little bit before throwing himself on the bed and sleep. Unfortunately, Her Majesty had other plans.

“Would you like to join me for dinner, Hyukjae?” she sweetly asked, but her eyes had this steely glint that the entire palace feared. “Come up to my chambers… Once you’ve gotten the dirt off your face.”

His fellow soldiers Youngwoon and Jongwoon exchanged smirks as they watched the queen go back to her room, escorted by Ryeowook and Jungsoo, the two maids she trusted the most. Jongwoon and Youngwoon made catcalls as Hyukjae freshened up and made himself presentable. He hit both his friends on the head right before he ran for the queen’s bedroom.

I don’t need anyone else, it’s only you…

When Hyukjae got to Donghae’s chambers, he noticed a small ornate box in Jungsoo’s hands. She looked like she was guarding the box with her life as she shielded it from Hyukjae’s view as he approached them. Ryeowook had a tray with their dinner, and she set it down before them before she and Jungsoo were dismissed.

“You’re wondering why I invited you up here, yes?” Donghae asked once she was sure they were alone and they were both comfortable.

Hyukjae said nothing but he nodded, staring curiously at the Queen.

“There is something I want to give you, Hyukjae. I want you to accept this.” She took the box that Jungsoo left behind earlier and gave it to Hyukjae. He grinned widely as he eagerly opened the box. Hyukjae’s eyes grew wide as he saw the contents of the box.

“Donghae! I mean… Your Majesty… It… it’s your royal portrait!” he gasped.

“I cannot accept this!” he added as he attempted to give the box back to his queen.

“I want you to keep it.” Donghae smiled as she pushed the box back toward Hyukjae who embraced it and looked at it as though it was a prized treasure. “Consider that as a token of my gratitude for your loyal service… and your friendship.”

Hyukjae stared at the Queen with wide eyes. She was giving him the only copy of her royal portrait. The female members of the royal family considered their portraits as the most valuable things they could possess. Hyukjae promised to keep this portrait safe.

“Now, Lee Hyukjae. I want you to do something for me.” Donghae said, looking at him straight in the eyes.

“Only for you, my Queen… Anything you wish.”

Donghae took a deep breath and turned her back to him. “I want you to go home and keep this portrait safe. Safeguard it as you would have protected me.”

Hyukjae was willing to do anything… But… He was told to go home… He was being sent away from the palace. Had he done something to displease her?

“Have I done something to displease you, Your Majesty?” Hyukjae asked as he threw himself on her feet. “Punish me with anything! Anything but this!”

“Get up!” Donghae snapped. “I don’t like seeing you grovel at my feet! What kind of a soldier are you, Lee Hyukjae?”

Hyukjae stood up and dared to look into Donghae eyes, which were currently flaming with rage. “A foolish soldier who loves you…” he whispered.

“Say that again?” Donghae requested, her tone gentler than her harsh one earlier.

“I said… I… I’m in love with you, Your Majesty…” Hyukjae confessed, his eyes filled with tears as he revealed his deepest secret.

“I know this is wrong… I shouldn’t love you this way… but…” he trailed off as he made his way to the door with the box in his hand.

He missed the smile that formed on Donghae’s lips as he confessed to her. “Please… Hyukkie…” she whispered, using the nickname she had given him, “sleep with me tonight… before you leave tomorrow morning…”

Hyukjae turned around and saw Donghae staring at him with eyes that had pain, regret, lust, and a little bit of love. He could not believe what he was seeing or hearing. It must have been another one of his dreams…  The woman he loved, Korea’s most powerful lady, was giving herself to him, a humble soldier who wanted nothing more than to stand by her side and keep her safe.

“Are you sure about this, My Queen?” he asked her. Surely his ears had been deceiving him.

“Make me yours, Lee Hyukjae…” Donghae begged as she pulled him on top of her, making them both land on the bed.

All thoughts of right or wrong flew out the window as Donghae claimed his lips and proceeded to kiss him as passionately as she could.

Hyukjae responded as forcefully as she was, and clothing began to disappear as things heated up and hands started to roam. Finally they broke apart and faced each other, lying on their sides, while they caught their breath.

“Make me yours, Lee Hyukjae…” she whimpered, putting his hands on her sash. “Please…”

"Are you sure?" he whispered back, knowing exactly what she was referring to.

She nodded as her hands reached out for him again, bringing him closer to her body, desperately needing the reassuring contact. "If Siwon can have Kibum, why can't I give myself to the man I love?"

Hyukjae silenced her with another passionate kiss. The remainder of their clothing disappeared in no time at all, and the covers of the bed were thrown back, even as their hands never stopped touching each other.

I can’t give up, I can’t let you go

The sun had not risen when Hyukjae woke up. He shifted his hand to the side and found that the space beside him was empty. He frantically sat up and looked around for the Queen, worried that she might be in danger. He saw her staring out her window, cradling the box she gave him the night before.

“You’re finally awake, Hyukjae.” She said softly, smiling a really sad smile. “I’ll be really sad to see you go. You were the only person I ever loved…”

“Then let me stay by your side, Your Majesty!” he said as he knelt before her.

“Get up, Hyukjae. Leave before the rest of the palace wakes up.

“But… My Queen!” he protested, gently taking her hands.

Donghae removed her hands from his and replaced them with the box containing her portrait. “This is your last order, Lee Hyukjae. I expect you to fulfill it well!” she barked. She passionately kissed him on the lips one last time before she pushed him out her door.

I can’t forget you, I can’t turn back around

Hyukjae obeyed his queen’s orders even though he could not understand why she wanted him to leave. He ran outside the palace gates and sneaked into the city. By the time he had stopped running, he was about to make the long journey home to Busan.

He was now far away from his queen. He was in a place where his eyes could see her. His sword could not protect her. He had to go back! Even if Queen Donghae sent him away… he had a feeling his Queen still needed him.

He ran all the way back to the palace, forgetting all traces of fatigue as he thought of having to protect the woman he loved.

By the time, he arrived back to the palace, night had already fallen. He had planned to sneak through the back door when he heard a loud scream coming from the direction of the garden. He thought it was the queen, so he ran to the garden as fast as he could, ready to kill the bastard who dared to harm his queen.

”Who’s there? I thought I heard screaming!” he shouted once he arrived at the garden.

Hyujkae looked around for any signs of movement until he almost tripped over something soft. He assumed it was a log, until his lantern showed him that it was Ryeowook. He wondered if she and Jongwoon got into a fight or something that she fell asleep in the garden until he saw stab wounds on her body and blood flowing out. He turned his attention to the bodies next to hers… Kibum’s and Jungsoo’s… They had been killed the same way Ryeowook was.

Hyukjae looked up and saw three people dressed in black arguing amongst themselves. Two people argued childishly while the other one face-palmed irritably at the sight. He saw bloodied swords in the hands of the ones arguing like toddlers. He silently sneaked out of the sight and called for back-up, namely Jongwoon and Youngwoon.

It was a three on three battle between them and the Chinese intruders, as Hyukjae learned later on. Youngwoon had successfully killed the huge assassin before he was stabbed by the only female assassin in the enemy’s team. Jongwoon had attempted to avenge his brother’s death and managed to kill the woman, only to anger the man who seemed to be the leader of this mission. Hyukjae wondered how on earth that Chinese man was able to kill Jongwoon and fight him at the same time. Hyukjae fought as hard as he could.

This man was going to kill the queen, and he could not let that happen. Unfortunately, the other man was more powerful than he was and managed to bring Hyukjae to his knees.

“I will never….” Hyukjae gasped even if the man’s sword was on his neck. “Let you…. Touch the queen!” he screamed as the man kicked him on the head, knocking him out effectively.

By the time Hyukjae had come to his senses, it was already dawn of the following day. He saw the dead bodies around him and remembered what had happened. He saw enormous flames from the direction of the queen’s chambers and ran there as quickly as he could. The whole place had been burned to ashes… The queen’s own body was chopped up into several parts. She had been burned beyond all recognition.

What kind of a soldier was he? He could not even protect his own queen. His heart felt as though it was stabbed with a knife. Although the blood did not pour out of him, like how it did with Ryeowook and Jungsoo, the bleeding happened inside. The more he looked at his queen’s dead body, the more it felt like salt was being rubbed into his wounds… He had failed his country… The woman he loved was dead, and he was too powerless to protect her.

Even when I'm born again, it's still only you. (Still still) Even as time goes by

Decades had passed ever since Queen Donghae gave him her last order. Hyukjae loyally guarded her photo with his life, as this was his only tangible memory of the queen. The night he spent with the queen was the first and last time he had ever stayed with a woman. No woman could compare to his Donghae’s beauty.

Even if he had left the palace after Queen Donghae’s death, her memory still haunted him everywhere he went. The fish in the ponds reminded him of her melodic laugh while the flowers that grew in the fields made him remember her beauty. He felt her innocent but determined spirit in the gentle breeze that blew… The stars in the sky told him that there can only be one queen… one woman to hold his heart forever… Lee Donghae, Korea’s last Queen… whose legacy will live in his heart forever.

Notes:

This is my first time to try writing implied!smut. Kim Ryeowook, you took away the last shards of my innocence... And I don't think I want it back. Oh my holy... I cannot even believe I wrote that part. That was inspired by a comment from a group mate who said that there should have been a love scene in our play. And we hit him on the head for it

This was inspired by "Portraits of the Sun", the play my group mates and I staged for our History class. I pretty much based Donghae on the character I portrayed and Hyukjae on my leading man.

This fic was basically an inter-marriage of the top two epic events of my year, Portraits of the Sun and Super Show 2 in Manila.

Uh... For shameless plugging/reminiscing purposes, I'm embedding a picture from the play.

Yes, I'm the girl wearing the yellow and pink outfit. Some Korean Empress I make... LOL. And the character who inspired Hyukjae is the one who's front and center.

Comments will always be loved!!!!! Please and thank you!

Trust me, this was heavily based on my play. According to my group mates, this is how we should have done the play if I didn't protest to doing a "love scene" with my leading man. (Come on! The leading man doesn't look like Wookie... Of course I'm not doing it!)

I'm glad you liked it. You'd probably get a good laugh out of my play once my friend uploads it for the world to see!
